Wildstar Beta: Is it the Warcraft Killer?

Over the years there have been several multiplayer online games that have tried to knock World of Warcaft off it's gold throne. Most recently, Elder Scrolls Online had some HUGE hype and amazing graphics but just kindof...fell flat. With Wildstar, a game from the makers of Guild Wars 2, the gaming community is excited but doesn't want to give their hopes up just to have their heart-shaped keyboards crushed again. Will Wildstar be the MMO that finally kills WoW?

WTBGold's Wildstar Beta Review Pre Order

To find out, I participated in the 3-day Open Beta on Friday the 21st through Sunday the 23rd where they let everyone try out the game and level from 1 to a cap of lvl 17. So, will Wildstar knock off the king? Short answer: Naw, probably not. Long answer? This. Game. Is. Fantastic. I play things to explore them, test them, and try to break em. And for a Beta, this was absolutely amazing.

Wildstar is an unusual MMO, and combines a futuristic and cartoon atmosphere in an alien environment. While most games make you pick one or two stereotypes, the character selection here allows you to choose between anything. If you're a hypermasculine warrior, go for it. If you want the super-sexy (read: busty) female character, you have options. If that offends you though, you have strong female achetypes. There are also more realistic models for both genders. If you want something cute, cuddly, and furry, you got it! And if you prefer a sleek, ferocious agile killer, there's that. Each of course has 20 or so slider bars with endless customization. But, then there's the gameplay.

See, each of your and your enemy's ability are shown on the ground in a blue/red design depending on where they'll hit. So, if an enemy has a circular AoE attack with a 2 second cast, a light red circle appears on the ground, and a dark red circle expands over 2 seconds, after which you take damage. This mechanic, so different from Warcrafts cast bars, seemed too much like training wheels at first, and I was really really (really) bored from sidestepping the damage. What's funny though is that come about level 10-15, the quest mobs start to get faster in their cast times, and more creative in their patterns. What used to be a circle is now a bullseye pattern or a rotating one-shotting lightning strike pattern. The patterns also gets to be really interesting when you accidentally pull four or five (or eight, oops!) mobs as an Esther, the equivalent of a mage/priest. The best thing about this is that you die!

Wildstar Beta combat ground effects

Why do I love dying? In a lot of games, there is horrible balance. I played Rift, and it has this neat mobile app where you get a virtual scratch card that rewards Rift coins. If you don't play for a day, you can come back in, trade in your coins, and essentially have full epics on a level 15 toon. When you pull an entire field of boars on a dps toon without knowing how to play and you don't die, it takes the fun out of the game. At each level of Wildstar, I was consistently impressed with the difficulty scaling of the armor and the enemies, at least for the two classes I played (and ignoring the level 3-4 outdoor Skeech mobs, fix those if you're reading, please). After testing the gameplay, I leveled all of the professions to see what the goldmaking aspect had in store, and I hadn't seen anything quite like it.

On the surface, the Wildstar Professions are laid out like most other MMOs. There are gathering professions and crafting professions, and for your crafting you learn new crafts in three ways: patterns, through leveling up, and through the tech tree. The latter and the crafting process itself are the new additions that really set apart professions in Wildstar. If you craft 3 Serviceable Steel Shockers, a Resonator weapon and part of a crafting quest, then you unlock 3 new patterns that are better than any quest gear you're likely to get at level 12. I'll leave the crafting process itself for a later guide but it's essentially the same as WoW. The main difference is that if you put in more materials, you can have better stats, but you have a chance to fail in the craft. Nice twist! Also, interestingly, this tech tree builds down and rewards talent points, so raiders that care about min/maxing will have to craft their hearts out to get every last bit of dps, healing, and mitigation they can.

Wildstar Beta Tech Tree Tradeskills Crafting

So, I loved almost everything about it. But, as I said, I don't think it will topple Warcraft. The graphics aren't mind-blowing enough to call for a mass exodus (although Age of Conan has shown that graphics doesn't necessarily equal subscribers). The main reason is that Wildstar doesn't seem to not know what it is. This may not be a fair representation considering the, literally, thousands of pieces of lore scattered throughout the game, but hear me out. In the level 1-15 starting zone I played, Algoroc, you experience the following environments: grasslands, pastures, city, swamp, lake, ice cave, mining cave, acid pit, frozen mountain, excavation site and a few others. Couple that with each quest mob moving in and out deciding to be a witch doctor, an alien technology, a member of the Horde (its equivalent), or just a piece of slime, and you're left feeling lost. Compare this to WoW, where you start off leveling in Elwynn Forest, which is...a Forest. It's like the game is trying to pack too much awesome into its opening level.

On the other hand, these first levels are awesome and I'm totally getting the game to see what the rest has in store. See y'all there!

Thanks for reading my little WoW blog! You can follow me on Twitter here and Twitch here. My YouTube channel is growing and has lots of great guides over here. I recommend that all goldmakers download the TSM Suite and the UndermineJournalGE addon for all goldmakers. You can read my setup guide if you'd like. Lesson Learned

So, I think I hit it too hard last week. I mean, didn't do too much out of the ordinary, but with the blog taking off, I guess I wanted to show off for you guys and show that I knew what I was talking about. You know, get my bankroll up and all that jazz. Granted, I did that, so my bank toon is happy, but honestly, I'm just whooped.

All that Bubbling Anima makes her sleepy.
In the past week, I kept things pretty normal, but added an extra cancel/rescan during the day, which is against my whole "diversify" mantra. Rather than craft once every day or two, I crafted once or twice a day. While that's probably normal for some moguls out there, I'm not used to it. And honestly, it got me thinking about doing a mass crafting session of the pvp goods during the weekends. You know, "make 5 of each of the contenders sets." Something along those lines. So I can just "Set it and Forget it."

Don't you toy with me Ron Popeil!
In other news, some friends over at Stormspire recommended some other blacksmith transmog craftables so I bought about 30k of mob drop recipes off the AH (Don't worry, they were all good deals! I checked!) So, hopefully that'll increase income in the near future. One problem I've run into though is finding a way to find and store the huge amount of new mats required for the transmog items. With current gear, crafting is simple; get GIB and Trillium, and find an anvil. With transmog crafting, once you load your queue, you're presented with 80 billion different mats. It's very profitable, and I've already broken even with a majority of the items still on the AH, but crafting has been a pain. It'll take a little doing and some time in Excel but a dealfinding list should do the trick. That way, any time I there are mats on the AH, I'll be able to snatch them up. Not 100% sure how best to prepare for future crafts though, but, experience will tell. I'll let you know as I go. Until then, keep up the routine and remember to

Sunday Wrap Up 4/28/2013: 50k in a day and LS Update

This week was absolutely phenomenal for me. Granted, my raid team is still stuck on Horridon, but that fight is dumb and no one likes pink dinosaurs anyways. In the gold-making side of the game, it was a great week.
World of Warcraft Druid Travel Form gold
Creatures kneel before my gold making skills.
First of all, I made a lot. Had one day where I logged in to over 50k in sales. Those days don't happen a lot, but when they do, they're really exciting. Normal days are 3k-10k in sales, of which about 25-50% of which is profit by my crafting setup. But 50k and you haven't even reposted?! That's the kind of stuff where you go out and spend real money celebrating! It was a mix of Living Steel, Mega Blues, Glyphs, Meta Gems, Blacksmithing, Transmog, and a few high priced items, but nothing special like the 502 weapons. Just run of the mill items.

Second, I got to help a friend. While I have an alt or two, I'm not an altoholic, so there's not a lot to spend my gold on. A buddy that I used to run arena's with just levelled and geared a Fury Warrior, named Howtowarrior. I play warrior, so his confidence in naming makes me smile. Thing is though,  he didn't really know how to play fury. But, he's a good guy, and just like he taught me not to run over hunter traps in 2v2, I taught him not to gem mastery. It was a fun day and I was able to buy him some gear, enchant him, and spend some time working on what is actually a decently complicated rotation (17 buttons in 3 GCDs). Funny thing was though, while I have been annoyed by others who ask for gold and enchants, I was happy to help him out. Sure, he's my friend, but it is endearing when someone comes to you with an open mindset, willing to learn. You know, "Hey, I have an hour to kill, and I'm not pulling the numbers I should. Do you have time to help me find the problem?" Not only did we bond more as in game friends (we haven't actually talked in probably a year or so) but, hey, he probably got 20k in free stuff. Also, he doubled his dps. So, there's that. /target [self] /pat back

UPDATES
I did a little Living Steel play last week and it has panned out pretty well, but not to the point where prices have doubled or anything. I bought LS at 375 gold, and posted them at 1000. Everyone gawked and immediately posted their inventory at 400g. So I bought it, and reposted at 900. They gawked again and reposted at 425. So I bought it and reposted at 700. They shuttered and slammed me in trade chat. They also posted more inventory at 450. So I bought that and reposted that at 700. All the bit players saw prices increased and started posting daily cooldowns at 500-700. I couldn't buy out this and maintain price increases, so I kept my 100-200 LS up at the crazy prices and sold a couple stacks at 600g, happy with the profit. Meanwhile, it seems like the higher priced ones were just reasonable enough to raise the mean and median on Auctioneer and TUJ so that the key players on the server started posting higher. Prices are about 600g now and I'm selling about 5-10 bars a day at 30-50% profit. :) Took a little time but it worked.

Sunday's Week in Review

First off, a huge THANKS to everyone who has been so supportive in my first week of blogging: Jim from PowerWord: Gold, Thairus from CreativeAccounting, Theck from SacredDuty, Nev the AH Addict, and Matthew Thomas from The Creative Craft. Y'all have answered a lot of my noob blogger questions and actually gotten me an audience in a remarkably short time frame. Thanks so much!

NEWS AND PATCH CHANGES:
Honestly, didn't want it until I made this picture. Thing looks awesome!
The Undermine Journal tweeted today about Living Steel. In short, the craftable 502 weapons are about to be available, and each one takes 12-18 Living Steel to make. For a decent raiding community, that's immediate increase in demand for living steel in the magnitude of the hundreds and maybe even thousands. For something with a daily cooldown this is a BIG deal and will probably create a huge spike in prices. For my realm, there were about 60 LS up on the auction house all under 450g, the average for the past couple months. So I bought them and reposted for double. Withing 10 minutes, there were another 20 up. So, from what I saw with the 5.2 trillium/ghost iron bar shenanigans, my observation is that we have a few people who have prepared for this and have stockpiled to actively play the LS game. If you play too, and you can buy a couple stacks cheaply now, you'll probably be able sell them one by one over the next week or two for a 25-50% profit. You might get lucky though and have a new tycoon try and control the market and buy out everything for ridiculously high prices trying to post them for more ridiculous prices. While he'll probably get left holding the bag, you'll have a nice little profit. Most markets that I've seen don't have more than 100 LS on them at the moment so you can't really go wrong either way; a 50k investment is not going to be a deal breaker if you have to liquidate. My suggestion then, is to stagger, have two price points, one high and one absurd. Personally, I'm posting half at 600-700g, and another half at 900-1000g. 50% profit and 100% profit. Easy. Done. If things don't sell, then after the dust settles, I'll sell em for market value.

MY STRATEGY (Since I haven't explained it yet)
First off, since I haven't explained this yet, I have two posting toons, one for glyphs and one for BS, JC, Transmog, Enchanting, Mega Blues, Vendor runs, and random resell stuff. I'm still new to the glyph market (she's only lvl 58) but gah! there are so many glyphs! IT'S RIDICULOUS!

To grow my wealth, I grow both my inventory and cash. Money Management is where most people fail and is where I failed initially too. If you find yourself perpetually broke, here's what I recommend. What I do is I set a threshold of gold across all my toons that I never fall below, no matter what opportunities present themselves. I started off with a minimum of 40,000 gold, then bumped that up to 50,000 gold. Then I had one reaaaally good day where I sold a bunch of ore and two 496 pieces, so from then on I kept the mark at 100k. It's been a while at 100k, so I think I'm gonna bump that up this week. Any profit I make, I use to buy underpriced transmogs or materials for profitable crafts. So when I say "Search. Craft. Post. Every Day." That's what I mean. Handle your money responsibly and always be growing with profitable moves.

Anyways, on to the financial recap!
